Chapter twenty-four

A Little Intimidation

After Verse squared away the basic introduction with his team, he left them to finish recovering. He’d basically said he would do his best for them as long as they were loyal to him, and that if that remained the case, they didn’t have to worry about getting beat up again. It was short and sweet.

He hadn’t really wanted the team, but it did offer him a necessary freedom to make his own schedule to some extent, and so perhaps it was a blessing in disguise.

The next item on his agenda was to find the healing house. It had been near the end of the day when he first arrived in the cavern and despite all that had happened, it was still only early evening, and he wanted to get there before they closed for the night. If they did. Nothing about the cavern was quiet, and it seemed like the Black Eyes operated as much at night as during the day.

The healer already knew he had the healing pill, which meant that someone might come to confiscate it eventually. He was also tempted by the offer to trade it in and he wanted to see what manuals the healers had available. He knew that the Introductory Jade Healing Scripture was rare and powerful, so he doubted that the healers had manuals available for similar arts, but he wanted to check.

Direct healing like his was almost absent in the first few realms of power, except for certain religious sects who focused most of their time and energy on it. Most people just used healing pills. Perhaps the Rain Peak Monastery that the monk had come from had something similar?

The Jade Scripture Sect hadn’t been an order of monks, but it had been philosophical and wise. It had long ago decided that healing was a necessary foundation for its disciples. That sort of planning was one of the advantages of having a large sect and thousands of years to establish a successful training regimen.

Nothing around him in this world so far had spoken to him with the same level of depth and profound age as he remembered in the very stones of those walls, not even the Deian ruin itself. There were also other manuals that might be helpful, including a better Stone technique or advancements to his other skills.

The healing house was situated not too far from the command center and the suspicious warehouse at the center of the Black Eye city. He would have to try to sneak into that warehouse at some point to see if the other disciples were there. He just needed to find a good reason first, as well as a way to get them out.

Had Teris been captured with the rest? For all of the fool’s problems, for some strange reason Verse didn’t want to let him die. Perhaps he was going crazy, but Teris was still the first person he’d met in this world and he had the idea that the boy was important somehow.
